Top 11 of 2014

It's hard to believe 2014 is coming to a close!  It's  been a year full of triumphs, struggles, and some weather I will never forget!

Let's take a look back at the posts you all liked the most this past year, shall we?

The stockings were hung...

Did you know that hanging your stocking from the fireplace can be dangerous?  We had ours hung on some stocking hangers on the mantel.  It looked so nice...but then my daughter pulled on hers a little to see it and the stocking hanger fell on her face!  We were so thankful it hit her cheek, it could have been much worse since it was only 1/2" below her eye!  Those things are heavy and I wasn't about to put them up again.  That was a scare enough for me.

Hollow core door...see what it's become!

After a trying week, I'm back.  This December has been a month I will remember, but won't want to repeat.
I'm getting back into the swing of things.  Today let's talk about doors.  More specifically, hollow core doors.
These doors are usually passed up.  They aren't old, or wood. or anything special, but there still are some things you can do with them.    I happened upon this flat, boring hollow core door and had a few ideas, but am delighted on how it turned out.

The making of a footstool

This piece just came together from parts I found.  I don't even remember where I got the legs from, but I thought they were so cool.

Signs and wall art

This is the time of year where I get to use up all the pieces I collected over the summer at garage sales.  Of course, you have to include a few Christmas signs...

Sewing table makeover

I was given this sewing table.  It sat for a few months while I finished up the many other things that had deadlines.  You know how it goes!  Well, I finally got around to working on it.  Follow along and see the transformation.
Here is the before.  It has a really neat shape.  It's not like any other sewing table I've seen before.

Here is a close up of the inside.  I removed the box in the upper left and the small pieces on the bottom shelf.

I decided to go bold on this one.  My husband says I'm stuck in a white rut.  Hey!  I like white!
After the paint was finished, I clear and dark waxed it.  The top was next on the list.  I would have loved to do a yardstick top, but since I didn't have enough of those, I used some small boards instead,

I cut them all to the approximate length first.  Then, by tracing the table shape from underneath, I cut the curve on each one.  After nailing them in place, I decided they needed a little support in the middle where the hole was.  I flipped it upside down and screwed a board in the space.

I used different shades of stain to create the top.

It's a unique piece for sure!

Painting a chair...

I've painted a few upholstery pieces.  Most people have heard of this by now.
I've used the small bottles of acrylic paints with fabric medium, on an old couch.
I used chalk paint on another piece I didn't post about.
This time I used latex and fabric medium.

A faux corbel

At one estate sale this past summer I ran into a lot of interesting wood pieces.  There were legs, trims, and molding, but the most interesting of all was this piece here.

2 pinterest inspired projects

I like the inspiration pinterest gives me.  I pin things to try all the time.  I don't always get to those pins, but as it gets colder outside, I am going to do my best to get something from one of my boards done each month.
Here are 2 things I finished this week, inspired by pinterest.

An old secretary gets a new look

At one of the last estate sales I went to, I found this secretary desk.  At first I looked at it, but walked away.  I came back for it a few minutes later.  It needed some work.  The drawer was in pieces, the top didn't close, and it had this vinyl adhesive inside that needed to be gone.

A nice black!

Hello all you chalk painters!  Have you been searching for a nice solid black like I have?  There are some pretty dark greys out there, but not really black.  At least not that I found until now!

Saving a radio cabinet

I love old radio cabinets!  Who wouldn't?  They have such great detail and they can be made into so many useful things. This radio cabinet was in need of a rescue.  It had some severe water damage, but it can be saved!

Some tips about upholstery fabric

I've been upholstering for a few years now.  It started with very basic seats and gradually I got up the courage to upholster difficult pieces like an antique couch.

Transform a corner cabinet by adding a door

This freebie came to be from a friend.  It just wasn't working for her so she decided to give it to me to see what I can do with it.  Well, Stephanie, I hope you are not disappointed!

Painting this and that

Painting furniture is one of those things that we re purposers do.  It's not something I post about often, but when I do I like to give you a few of them to look at.  It's amazing how paint can transform any piece.  Hope you find one you like!

Highboy gets boy stripes

I just couldn't pass up this dresser while out garage saling (how do you spell that???) last week.  It was in great condition despite the poor paint job.  This highboy dresser just needed a new dressing.

Headboard to storage coat rack

I was given this headboard from a friend.  I just love it when that happens!  Anyways, I wanted to make it into something different.  I decided to alter it slightly and came up with this coat rack.

15 Couch Revivals

Hometalk asked me to create a board about couch revivals after seeing my painted couch.  I feel very honored to be asked. More than that, I was inspired by other couch revivals I found.

What to do when you can't save the veneer

I received some freebies from a friend who bought a house full of stuff.  This desk was one of those great freebies:

Overhauling a settee

I'm not sure if this is an Eastlake settee or not.  Doing the research to find out- there isn't much out there.  I can tell you it is very old based on how it was put together.  Anyways, it was in a sad state when I got my hands on it.  I put it out there to see if anyone wanted it and to my surprise I had a huge list of people that were interested.  So, this is how the makeover of this settee went:

Shortcut to that layered chippy look

Who says you have to use 3 quarts of paint when painting a large piece to get the layered chippy look?  Not me.  That's way too much work, time and money.  When a client asked me to paint this piece with baby pink showing through, I knew I wasn't going to paint the whole thing pink and then white...nuh uh.

Large wall clock- it's functional!

I was gifted a short little table, and instantly I knew...it would become a clock.  I had been admiring large wall clocks, but not their price tag.  Ever since I finished my wall of mirrors (scroll to end of post to see), I needed something different for over my mantel.  Mirrors on every wall just wasn't working.

Ugly duckling to beautiful swan

So many of us pass by these tables.  They are outdated and chunky.  Let's look at it in another light.  Here is how I took this table from ugly duckling to beautiful swan.

Creating a chaise- 2 chairs combined

Many of you that have been to my blog before know I like to create different things.  Building is one of my favorite things to do.  This project is one of those!  I saw the inspiration on Pinterest here.

Making a hall tree with a bench seat

I got a set of doors for free!  That's the  best price, wouldn't you agree?  I was at a garage sale and leaning up next to there garage were 2 doors in a pile of scraps and metal.  I asked if they were throwing the doors away, and they said "yes"!  I asked if I could have them, and they came home with me.  This is one of those doors.

Catching up

I've been a little MIA and I have to admit, it's been wonderful!  Don't worry, the projects are still getting done, but I took a little vacation and some how after that it didn't seem all that important to worry about what I would post about.  Today I am just gong to share some miscellaneous projects to get me back into the swing of things.

Door hall tree and a bonus!

I recently came across 3 old doors...for FREE!  Talk about exciting!  I love to work with old things and make something different.  This makeover is not something new.  People have been using old doors as hall trees for a while now.  Hopefully you will still enjoy this version.

Painting an antique couch

I was given the opportunity to buy this couch and chair set.  I jumped on it!  Wouldn't you?  I knew someone who wanted it and this transformation is her vision.

To blog or not to blog...

That is a question I have  been asking myself lately.  The projects will go on, of course.  That is a part of me and I enjoy it so much.  I also enjoy sharing them with others, but I am finding I can do that on Facebook as well.

A beautiful table before and after

When this table was posted on a local Facebook group site I couldn't resist.  It has so many unique qualities.

Footboard + coffee table = bench

What do you get when you combine a foot board and coffee table?  A bench of course.  I had a request to create a headboard for someone...a couple of months ago.  She wanted a bench with a full back, no spindles.  What usually happens when you get a specific request like that? You can't find it!  That's what happened to me.  I could not find a headboard and foot board that were full without the spindles.  I decided to improvise.

Revival of an outdoor bench- with chalk paint!

This bench was brought to me to make it look like wood again.  It is not a wood bench so it wasn't "Oh, I'll just smear some deck stain on it and it will be good" type of project.  It was a type of plastic or resin.

Dry erase calendar

I love to make one of a kind things.  I picked up this photo display at a garage sale in hopes to use it for a certain project.  Well, that didn't work out.  The photo areas were just too big to fit the piece I needed them for.  So, I needed an alternative.

How to turn a dresser into a wine buffet

I got this dresser from a friend.  I was sad to find out that the drawers were shot.  You know not all drawers are made of solid wood.  This was one of them, so when the tracks went bad, they were nearly irreparable.  It sat in my garage for a few weeks until one day I decided to gut the whole thing.  It started off as a possible book shelf.

The Making of a Faux French Shutter

This is another door re purpose.  These hollow, plain, closet doors were a freebie find.  You never know what you can do with something, until the inspiration hits.
