How to make a beaded flower hair tie

I have been making these for years.  You will need the following supplies:

1. beads of your choice
2. pony tail holder
3. wire- I like the heavier wire as it holds the shape better
4. round disk (see photo below)
5. hot glue
6. felt

These disks I use to make flowers are probably something you can go without, but I like to use them as a sturdy base.  I found them at Michaels years ago.  They were a clip on earring in the jewelry department.  I clipped off all the clip on parts.

Obviously, I am a fan of the DIY world.  I created a headboard for my master suite and one for my daughter.  I like the attention they draw when you walk into the room.  They also leave more space in the room than a bed with head and foot board.  I left off the pillows so you could get a good look at the headboard.

I cut the shape out of a piece of 1/4" plywood, covered it in lots of batting, then stapled on the fabric.  In this case I didn't use a nice thick foam since I wasn't going to tuft it.  With the batting, it is comfortable to lean on while I am reading.  It is much cheaper to do it this way if you decide you don't need the foam.

For my daughters, I used a dresser mirror frame.  When I received this it didn't have the mirror. So, once again I added lots of batting then covered it in a pink velvet fabric.
You can use so many different things to make a head board.  I love the uniqueness of each one that someone makes.

My favorite Author

I was raised in a Christian home and have known God all my life.  I never really felt that close relationship with him until this past year.  I started reading books by author Francine Rivers.  She has a way of writing that draws you into the story.  I never wanted to put the book down.  She has so many books and I have only read a few.  I cannot wait to dig into another of her masterpieces.  She has truly brought me closer to Christ with her writing.

Check out some of these titles:
Redeeming Love
A Lineage of Grace
Mark of the Lion (3 books in this collection)
Her Mother's Hope
Her Daughter's Dream

These are the books I have read so far.  If you get a chance pick one up and read it then let me know what you think.

Making old new again

I picked up this cream rug from a garage sale for 50 cents.  Not bad, huh?
I have been looking for a small rug to place at my back door.  Rugs are so expensive so I decided to stencil it.  This is something I have been wanting to try and already had all the things on hand.  I just needed to find a stencil.  I printed of this shape on cardstock and cut it out.

You can find this stencil here-
After I cut out the shape I placed it on the rug.  Mixed paint with a fabric medium I bought at Michaels and followed their instructions.  It was a 2 paint : 1 fabric medium ratio. I used a sponge brush so I didn't have any bristles poking in the wrong direction and putting paint where I didn't want it.

The final finished product looks like this:
After the paint dried for 48 hours I had to iron it, per package instructions.  I am very glad I tried this.  I like how it adds some interest.  Now it is your turn.  It's not that hard.  You can do it!

Sewing desk makeover

I found this sewing desk waiting by the side of the road for a trash pick up.  Great solid condition with dovetail drawers.  It sat for about a week in my garage before I decided what to do with it.

I ended up decoupaging fabric on it. This is something I had been wanting to try. so here goes.
This is the before. As you can see it has the flip top for the sewing maching. I did support that with a board on the bottom.  Sorry no photos of that as I have already sold this piece.

I lightly sanded the top of the dresser to make sure the decoupage would grab on nicely. Then added a nice layer of decoupage.
The fabric I chose was a leopard king sized pillowcase.

I cut it to the measurements of the desk then layed it out and smoothed out all the bubbles.
Added 3 more layers of decoupage on top and voila!  A new desk!

Mermaid tails

So the girls will all receive a mermaid tail for coming to the birthday party.  I just winged this, using fabrics and unused clothing I had on hand.
The skirts were simple to make.  I just added some elastic around the waist.  Cut the bottom of the skirt to a point then added some fabric in a contrasting shade for the fins.
I cannot wait to see them on.  I hope they will fit.   I just made a guess at each of their sizes.

Pirate maps and hooks

We have a birthday party coming up.  My 2 lovely children's birthdays are 3 days apart so I (for now) have their party together.  I have to admit even at the soon to be ages of 4 and 6 it is getting hard to think up a theme to please them both.
We settled on a pirate and mermaid theme.
For the boys, I made treasure maps and pirate hooks.
Easy to do with some felt, stuffing and a little sewing.  I had this idea in my head and looked around online to find if anyone else made something similar.  I found a few, but
The tutorial I used for these hooks can be found here
over at Every day mom ideas
Here is a photo of my fabric cut out.

Here is the finished product

The maps were simple and I used the image transfer technique that I found at Home Frosting.  Here is the tutorial
I used some scraps of painters drop cloth and here is my finished product
I like how the map has an old faded look.  I probably should have taken a close up.

Tomorrow I will share with you the girls' mermaid tails.

Chair: drab to fab

One of my favorite things to update is chairs.  I have a chair obsession!  I admit it.  Remember this chair from the first post?
I found this at my local goodwill.  This chair was sturdy and had such great detail I could not pass it up.
I do not have pictures of the process as I did this chair a while ago before I had the intentions of starting a blog.
I painted the arms and legs with silver paint from rustoleum.
I upholstered it in a plain black fabric and used silver nailhead trim to finish it up.
Are you ready for the reveal?
Ok, here goes

I am ashamed to admit this chair is currently in my basement.  Not the best picture with the gorgeous cement floor and brick walls.  My dream is to someday finish the basement in black and white.

Now, I want to know what you think?  Do you think the black fabric is too plain?  I have been going back and forth with painting on a stencil design or leaving it as is.  Any thoughts?

An Introduction

Hi, I am new to blogging and am excited to get started.  I love to repurpose things and create things.  I have been inspired by a fellow blogger over at  raisingdickandjane to start my own blog, though I have been thinking about it for a while.  If you are a blogger and have any ideas and tips for me I would love to hear about them!

Here is a sneak peak of what I will be showing you in my next post so be sure to visit back real soon.
